About your code
This is your journal code — save it now (password manager,
note, screenshot). It is the only key to your journal: it cannot be recovered,
reset, or seen by us. Codes are generated randomly so there is nothing to guess.
Your journal is encrypted in this browser, with this code, before it
is saved anywhere. Below, you choose whether it stays in this browser only or also syncs to your other
devices. Either way we never receive the code and cannot read your journal.
Where should this journal be kept?
With sync, an encrypted copy is kept on our server so this code opens your journal on your other devices, and an entry deleted on one is deleted on all.
What our server can see
With sync, the encrypted copy is also stored on our server, so this
code opens your journal on your other devices. That copy can only be decrypted in a browser where your code
has been typed. The server can see that an encrypted journal exists, roughly how big it is, and each time you
open or change it. Like any website, it sees your IP address; our sync database keeps only the week of the
last sync and never your IP address, but the web server's ordinary access log may record both. Every device
that has this journal open receives new entries, and an entry deleted on one is deleted on all. Nothing is
uploaded until you open the journal.
This browser only: the code opens it here and
nowhere else. To move it, open your journal and press Back up, then choose Have a backup file? on
the other device. You can turn sync on later inside your journal.

A session’s watcher link is end-to-end encrypted. Its key stays after the
“#” in the link and never reaches our servers, which only hold scrambled data.
Links expire within about 36 hours, and you can rotate or kill them at any time.
Anyone with the link can view that session until then, so share carefully.

Limits worth knowing
Limits worth knowing. Your code is typed into a page this site sends you, so you are trusting the site each time you open your journal, with or without sync. While a journal is left open on a phone, that phone also receives what your other devices add, and what is deleted there is deleted everywhere; your other devices ask first when many entries, or your imported history, are deleted. If that phone is lost with your journal open, “Lock my other devices” (it needs your code) closes the journal on it the next time it syncs while online, for example when the journal page is opened, or shown again after a minute or more; a journal open on this page also locks itself 12 hours after its code was typed. Neither reaches Cross-Check’s journal panel: a journal opened there stays open until that panel’s Lock button is pressed or the page is closed. A lock deletes nothing from your journal, cannot reach a phone that stays offline, and cannot take back what was already seen there; your other devices are locked too and ask for the code again. Someone who gets a moment with your open journal cannot take away the ability to read it later, but can delete or damage its server copy; your devices keep their own copies. Deleting the server copy does not remove the journal from your devices. If this is more than you want the server to know, keep sync off; everything else works the same.
To remove this journal everywhere, delete the server copy first, then remove it from each browser.
