Summary
Ephedrine is a naturally occurring alkaloid found in Ephedra species. It is used medically as a bronchodilator, decongestant, and to treat hypotension. Structurally similar to amphetamines but less potent. Regulated in many countries due to its use as a precursor in illicit methamphetamine synthesis. Side effects include increased heart rate, hypertension, anxiety, insomnia, and urinary retention.
