Summary
Citalopram is an SSRI that is used to treat depression. It does not lead to a high and causes a wide range of negative psychological and physical effects when people attempt to abuse it and can lead to serotonin syndrome and cause suicidal ideation. Those with bipolar disorder tend to go into a mixed state or manic states when trying SSRI's.

Effects
Aggregated from 17 single-substance Erowid experience reports; 41 Erowid reports where another drug was taken too are left out
Each bar shows the share of analyzed reports whose text mentions that effect — a mention is not always a first-hand experience (fear of an effect or something witnessed can count). Mentions saying the effect did not happen are left out; that check reads keywords, so it can miss some. The shaded band on a bar, and the small range after its number, is the 95% interval: where the share could plausibly be with other reports of the same kind. Fewer reports, wider band. Tap or hover any number for details. The second value is the Bluelight extractor's per-effect confidence; a dash means the row is Erowid-derived, which has no confidence measurement.
Too few reports for bars: these effects come from 17 single-substance Erowid reports, and a bar is drawn only from 20 reports or more. With fewer, a percentage cannot tell a common effect from a rare one. Counts are shown instead. Why 20?

Also reported in combinations. In the 41 Citalopram reports where another drug was taken too, 8 (19.5%) mention hospital, emergency services or an overdose, 3 (7.3%) a seizure and 2 (4.9%) psychosis. In the 17 single-substance reports: 2, 1 and 1. These are not in the figures above: they cannot be put down to Citalopram alone, and a mention is not always something that happened to the writer.

I will start by saying that my tolerance to drugs has always been surprisingly good. I am a 5 ft 1 female, and I have been experimenting with different ones for about 5 years now, and it is very rare I have bad experiences.
A bit of background first: I'd been on Fluoxetine the month before, but ceased it as my doctor and I agreed it wasn't much help anymore with my OCD and depression. I wanted to try something a bit 'stronger.' So we planned for 20 mg of Citalopram to start, then 40 mg once I adjusted.
Citalopram was the first drug I was prescribed for my anxiety and depression. Id gone to my general practitioner (GP) in a desperate state. I told him Id been suffering with a bout of insomnia not my first which had ruined a recent holiday but that I had been anxious and depressed for many years.
To preface this experience, let me say that I am an experienced drug user, including cannabis, alcohol, lsd, mushrooms, MDMA, cocaine, adderall and other a.d.h.d. medications, xanax and other benzo's, most opiates, and others. Opiates have become my favorite.
I always like to start accounts like this with a little background information about my life to enable you, the reader, to get a partial insight into my life. I've been suffering with both generalized anxiety and social anxiety now for the past several years, to varying degrees of intensity.
I consider myself to be an experienced drug user, having taken at least 500 LSD and strong mushroom trips, used large amounts of heroin (never now) and cocaine (occasionally), still use MDMA occasionally and smoke some form of dope most days.
I had just run out of alprazolam, marking the end of a two month binge. This was not a new situation for me; I had undergone withdrawal from benzos many times over the years. I knew exactly what to expect, but nevertheless I would do anything to avoid it.

So I started a thread about this in OD. Went to the psychiatrist, tried to get some amphetamine cause I'll start studying medicine in two weeks. Instead she gave me citalopram - what a bummer... Or so I thought.
*As for experience level, this story take place about 4 years ago when I was 18. I'm now 22 and a recovering heroin/opiate addict, an addiction that took me to hell and back, although I'm doing quite well now.

The app keeps custom substances simple, so the full dose ranges live in the description text above. Ranges are harm-reduction guidance, not a prescription.
