Eszopiclone is a Schedule IV controlled substance in the United States. Tolerance develops rapidly within a couple of weeks of daily use. Abrupt cessation after prolonged use can cause severe withdrawal symptoms; gradual tapering or cross-over to long-acting benzodiazepines like diazepam is recommended.
