    Summary Erowid

Fluoxetine is a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) which is widely prescribed in the treatment of depression. It is also used in the treatment of alcohol dependence and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

    Tolerance

Build-up therapeutic effects take 2–6 weeks to stabilize; this is receptor adaptation, not traditional tolerance
Reset discontinuation effects can last weeks; taper recommended

    Effects Erowid

Aggregated from 11 single-substance Erowid experience reports; 64 Erowid reports where another drug was taken too are left out

Each bar shows the share of analyzed reports whose text mentions that effect — a mention is not always a first-hand experience (fear of an effect or something witnessed can count). Mentions saying the effect did not happen are left out; that check reads keywords, so it can miss some. The shaded band on a bar, and the small range after its number, is the 95% interval: where the share could plausibly be with other reports of the same kind. Fewer reports, wider band. Tap or hover any number for details. The second value is the Bluelight extractor's per-effect confidence; a dash means the row is Erowid-derived, which has no confidence measurement.

Too few reports for bars: these effects come from 11 single-substance Erowid reports, and a bar is drawn only from 20 reports or more. With fewer, a percentage cannot tell a common effect from a rare one. Counts are shown instead. Why 20?

Also reported in combinations. In the 64 Fluoxetine reports where another drug was taken too, 13 (20.3%) mention hospital, emergency services or an overdose, 2 (3.1%) a seizure and 3 (4.7%) psychosis. In the 11 single-substance reports: 3, 0 and 0. These are not in the figures above: they cannot be put down to Fluoxetine alone, and a mention is not always something that happened to the writer.

Growing Up On Antidepressants... cautionary exp #79150

Before I start I just want to say that I was always an outgoing, extroverted kid. I was always nice to everyone and always had many close relationships with friends. I loved life as a kid. With that being said, here’s my story. When I was 13 my parents got divorced.

The Worst Year of My Life cautionary exp #42810

The year that my parents decided that I was depressed was when I was 15; a sophomore in high school. They didn’t really know me, and I suppose I preferred it this way, but eventually they came to the conclusion that I was ‘anti-social and depressed’, so they set up a meeting with a counsellor ‘for me’.

I was put on 20 mg of Prozac daily at the age of 16, in an attempt to lessen the effects of bulimia and bipolar disorder on my life. At first, everything seemed to be going fine - the only problem I ran into was the obvious problem of a bulimic taking oral medicine - the medicine induced cravings, which would make me b...

Eleven months ago (September) I went to a psychiatrist and was diagnosed as having a severe anxiety disorder. The psychiatrist prescribed me 25mg of prozac daily and sent me on my way. Over the next few months I had very little contact with him, approx. 15 mins every 3 weeks or so and recieved no real counseling.

I was diagnosed with depression in December 2002, and given a prescription for Prozac for 9 months. I took the Prozac between Dec 2002 and May 2003. It made me feel slightly 'disconnected', but I didn't think this was noticeable until my brother mentioned it one day.
