Piracetam is generally well-tolerated, with few side effects. It is used as a cognitive enhancer and in the treatment of myoclonus, sickle cell disease, and cognitive disorders. Higher doses are sometimes used therapeutically. Common side effects may include headaches (often mitigated by choline supplementation), nervousness, weight gain, and insomnia. Patients with renal insufficiency or those prone to brain hemorrhaging should not use piracetam.
